By Lelia Hall

Several methods of relieving stress have been developed and adopted. Some prove helpful but none of them can be beat tai chi or taiji. Tai chi is the short form of tai chi chuan, which is a Chinese term meaning ultimate fist when translated in English. The exact origin of this type of martial arts is not known as there are several different stories that try to place it in various locations. However to learn professional tai chi Toronto is a good place to visit.

This form of martial art has changed with time in respect to Chinese generations. Each variation in style and technique was perpetrated for a particular reason. All categories and classes of taichichuan fall under a certain Chinese family. It is better to understand this because it helps enhance and appreciate the class or technique offered by the fitness center a person is training from.

Taiji features five major styles, each technique was given a name after the family, which developed it. The families include Yang, Chen, Hao, and Wu. The theory under the different techniques is almost the same, though the approach to training is different. New and hybrid techniques have evolved with time, but the mentioned 5 orthodox techniques are the categories recognized worldwide.

Distinctions in the techniques are in terms of speed and movements. The two determiners are responsible for differences in the styles. Same styles may be effected in different movements as required by the category. Distinctions are required because of unique needs among trainers and trainees. Moreover, some styles are unnecessary as a result of changes in footwear gear. Nowadays styles that were executed when wearing wood sandals do not matter much.

Today martial art classes focus on health and are common in senior and community centers, clinics, and hospitals. It is practiced due to its mental health and physical benefits. Tai chi training is based on two major features taolu and tuishou. Taolu means solo and involves a sequence of slow movements with emphasis on abdominal breathing, natural range of motion, and straight spine.

Partnered training is what Tuishou is about. It involves hand locking and pushing in circular motion. It is done in 3 ranges namely, close, medium, and long. It incorporates a style of dancing that enhances flow of blood. Tuishou starts with simpler basic techniques before advancing to difficult styles. It is important as it contributes to internal peace, while enhancing sensitivity.

Taichichuan has been absorbed fully into sports. It is a game held and managed under Wushu competitions. This involves, demonstrating predetermined techniques within a given period. Participants are assessed and awarded basing on certain rules. Tournaments may have dual, group or individual categories. Tai chi event organizers allow background music.

Sanda is the present day sport and combat technique, which borrows much from old Chinese boxing. It includes grappling, wrestling, and other fighting techniques. Sanda observes particular rules so as to minimize possibilities of injury amongst competitors. Dangerous self-defense styles like chokes, joint locks, and elbow strikes are disallowed. Protective gear such as gloves, cup, mouthpiece, and helmets are being incorporated slowly into the sports.
