Key Facts On The Sun Tan

By Haywood Hunter

A sun tan, which may also be referred to as simply tan, involves the temporary darkening or tanning of human skin. This is possible through an assortment of methods. Some of the techniques include direct exposure to UV radiation, which may come naturally through sunlight or artificially through tanning booths. There are many sunless tanning products available for use too.

In general, health officials warn against doing this to the skin. Exposure to UV rays is particularly frowned upon. It is ok, and recommended, for people to have casual exposure to the sun and its rays for the purpose of getting natural Vitamin D. Still, artificial lights and sun bathing on a frequent basis is not good for the body. These behaviors have been linked to an increased rate of health issues, including melanoma.

Some people sun tan or burn more easily than others. Typically this has to do with the variations in skin types and colors. This may also be because of genetic factors. To avoid sunburn, many apply sunscreen products to skin that is exposed to the sun. However, there are others who use special oils and other products to accelerate the process of getting a sun tan.

People who have pale or light skin often burn rather than sun tan. Those with dark or light intermediate tons are less likely to burn and more likely to sun tan. People who have black, brown or dark skin almost never sunburn. Their skin may darken more from these practices, as it already has a dark tone.

Wearing clothes while doing this can result in sun tan lines, which many find embarrassing or unappealing. Usually the goal is to achieve an all-over, even tan. To do this, some people wear nothing or minimal amounts of clothing during the process. This is less of an issue in the case of sunless tanning.

To avoid UVA and UVB exposure, sunless tanning methods may be employed. These are also quite popular during times of the season when the sun is rarely out or not as harsh. The products come as gels, pills, sprays, lotions, creams, makeup and more. Sunless techniques are not considered as dangerous as standard methods, such as booths and bathing. However, there are still a lot of chemicals present in sun tan formulas.

It does not matter what process is used to obtain a sun tan, the results are always temporary. How long the sun tan lasts is often relative to the method, products used and the person. It is common for tans to fade and disappear as skin peels off and takes on a new layer. Sunless products work in the same way and are do not generally just wash off.

People interested in darkening their tone of skin for a temporary period of time might go about getting a sun tan. This can be achieved via numerous products and techniques. Traditional methods, including tan booths and sun bathing, require direct exposure to ultraviolet rays. Sunless products provide the same results with less risk. Color and type of skin can effect the duration, quality and evenness of the sun tan.
