How Arch Support Orthotics Can Bring Relief From Pain

By Phyllis Schroeder

Numerous people, both old and young, suffer from fallen arches. Flat feet, as it is commonly called, is not a particularly worrisome condition and it is not really recognized as a disease, but it is most certainly a condition that can cause severe discomfort. With arch support orthotics most of the negative effects can be negated, thank goodness. This means that the condition can be managed without severe medical intervention.

Babies are all born without developed arches. It is only later in infancy that they develop. In some cases, however, the arches simply never develop and the individual concerned will just have to accept the fact that they will have to live with flat feet. The development of arches can be encouraged in young children but then the parents need to recognize the problem at a very early age.

Flat feet or fallen arches can occur later in life too. Obese people are especially prone to this condition because the feet simply cannot cope with the weight placed upon them. Older people often develop fallen arches because the tendons and muscles in their feet weaken over time. Those suffering from diabetes and hypertension are particularly in danger of developing flat feet.

There are a few surgeons that will attempt to correct flat feet by implanting a bone in the ankle. Most experts agree, however, that this is a risky and dangerous operation. The risks are simply not worth it. The use of special insoles is a far better option. Best of all, these insoles are affordable and they can often be used is several pairs of shoes.

Sufferers of fallen arches can do a lot to ease their discomfort. Podiatrists advise that they walk barefoot, preferably in sand, as often as possible. They should also spend time standing on their toes and they should perform stretching exercises. This means stretching the toes apart and rotating the feet from one side to the other a few times a day.

One of the most important preventive measures is to wear shoes that fit well and that provide support to the arches. This is especially true for sports people. High heels should be avoided as far as possible. Experts advise that shoes should never be bought when tired or on hot days. It is even advisable to wear inserts even when not suffering from fallen arches.

When buying insoles it is important to buy quality products. Many companies sell inferior products that may actually cause more harm than good. It may be a good idea to ask advice from a general practitioner or from a qualified podiatrist. Quality products not only last longer but they also provide better support. Inferior products do not last and they may lead to additional problems with the feet.

A simple device such as an insole can provide people with fallen arches much comfort. It is definitely worthwhile considering. While the condition cannot be cured, it is certainly manageable and much can be done to relieve the symptoms, such as back ache and feet fatigue.
