Finding Organic Non GMO Supplements

By Dominique Martin

All dietary supplements are not created equal. Although there are many good companies and safe products in the industry, there are also manufacturers who cut corners in quality control and may even disregard industry standards of purity and truth in labeling. Now that genetically modified organisms are in the food supply, even more caution is needed when choosing products for self or family. Choosing organic non GMO supplements is one way to find the best nutritional aids.

The 'organic' certification is one indication of high quality and safety. No organically-certified food or formula can legally contain genetically modified ingredients. This means that all health aids that are so certified should be GMO-free. Certification comes from independent organizations and the federal government. Many companies will have more than one badge of quality.

There is a lot of mainstream support for introducing unnatural and unproven substances into the food supply and the natural health industry, but so far the organic standards have not been lowered. It's important for consumers who wish to avoid anything not natural to express their opinions to elected and appointed officials who influence these matters. Raising public awareness on the lack of safety testing for genetic modification is important, too.

Companies that do not include GMOs in their products will usually display this information on their label. A lack of this assurance will not necessarily mean that altered ingredients are used, but it should be a sign that further questions should be asked before purchasing such products. Customer service reps will be able to answer this question; look for toll-free telephone numbers on product labels. Consumers should not assume all products are safe.

Supplements are designed to augment the regular diet, which may be deficient in one or more important nutrients. This term covers vitamins, minerals, herbals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and fiber, as well as a host of other substances and formulas. Many foods are therapeutic, like the spice tumeric or cocoa, from which dark chocolate is made. Hormones like melatonin and progesterone are other widely-used, natural products. Supplements are in a different class than drugs.

Many formulas do contain genetically modified ingredients, and many consumers are not bothered by this. Those who are can choose to buy only organic products or ones with a GMO-free label. There are other benefits to organic products, as well. They contain no artificial ingredients like colors or preservatives, are generally of very high quality, and come from companies dedicated to natural healing and health.

Quality matters. Some formulas have been found to contain only traces of the nutrients they promise to deliver. Others use substances which may be poorly utilized by the system, making them a waste of money if not actually harmful. Some forms of iron, for example, may do little for anemia and can even accumulate to toxic levels in the body. Other, more reputable companies have pioneered research in health and have a long record of safety and integrity.

Consumers may feel bewildered by the sheer number of products available and the difficulty of knowing exactly which to choose. Testimonials posted on websites touting particular products may really be advertising rather than true reviews. The organic and GMO-free seals are assurances of purity and quality.
